Raising Adopted, Foster, or Kinship Children as a Single Parent

Many households are led by single parents raising children. The most common reason these men and women pursue single parenthood is their desire to be a parent, even if they don’t have a partner. They may choose to form their family through adoption or foster care. Others are raising family members because kinship care is preferable to non-family placements when a child needs a safe landing place.

Single parents face unique challenges regardless of how their children came to them. However, it is possible to thrive as a single-parent family. Creating a Family has many resources for adopting or fostering a single person. Many of the resources we offer for Kinship Parenting will apply to single kinship providers, as will the content for Adopting or Fostering as a Single Person.
