- The Connected Child by Dr. Karyn Purvis, Dr. David Cross, and Wendy Sunshine. This is a must have for adoptive parents regardless how old their child is at adoption or whether their child is adopted domestically or internationally. In truth, this is a very good parenting book for all parents regardless how their child joined the family, but it spends time on addressing the sometimes complex and confusing behaviors of adopted children. I LOVE this book. It expands on the information I provided in the last chapter of my book and follows my basic philosophy: focus first on connections and then on corrections. After reading this book, you will feel hopeful and energized. You can listen to my interview with Dr. Purvis on the Sept.3, 2008 Creating a Family radio show. This book, by the way, would be a great companion book to Raising Your Spirited Child by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka, which is another one of my favorites.

Listen to these shows by clicking on radio at the top menu and then click on the date of the show. - Books by Deborah Gray: Attaching in Adoption and Nurturing Adoptions: Creating Resilience After Neglect and Trauma. Simply the best! Attaching in Adoption is written for parents and Nurturing Adoptions for professionals, but you can't go wrong with either of them. I would recommend starting with Attaching in Adoption, and then decide if you need Nurturing Adoptions. Perhaps you might want to ask your library to buy or order it through interlibrary loan for you to review before you buy it. I love her books!
- Also look at the books under Adoptive Parenting since many of them talk about creating attachment.
- The Complete Book of International Adoption by Me. Not to toot my own horn, but I think the last chapter of my book is one of the best primers on creating healthy attachment in the first year post adoption.
