Yeah, but no matter how much money you make you still can't give each child the time they need and deserve.

Dawn,
Just discovered your site, through igoogle I think, but am looking forward to learning SO much from you. I am a newbie, a Holt Adoptee # A-20 from the first 'dirty dozen' in May 21, 1956 to leave for the great USA. As a Multi-racial or Trans-racial adoptee I was very fortunate to be adopted OUT of Korea.
I have lived here since 1995, teaching English, just started to blog in April because I think Balance is needed in "This Thing of Ours-Adoption". Every view is important to hear objectively and respectively, from all the voices. The spectrum of different stories are from 'black to shades of grey to white', representing the great to terrible. I am thankful that I have 'discovered' you.

My wife and I were matched to a little boy in China back in May (shortly after Mother's Day). He, at the time, had an uncorrected cleft lip & palate and was extremely under weight due to the fact the orphanage believed he was born premature. Since that time, his lip has been corrected.

We have found that when you tell people you know that you are adopting a child with "special needs" they immediately assume you are adopting a kid with mental retardation. My wife, who is a RN in an Emergency Room has started telling people that we are adopting a child with a known medical condition. This has seemed to have a much better reaction.

We are starting to see that the wait to get a child with no known medical conditions from China (Non-Special Needs) is now over 4 years and predicted to hit 5 in the not so distant future.

Our agency has also told us that the wait to get a girl out of the Waiting Child Program has started creeping toward the 2 year mark (depending on what medical conditions you say you are willing to undertake).

What people don't talk about is the number of BOYS that are waiting to be adopted out of China's Waiting Child Program.

Apparently, with our agency almost 90% of the people who are interested in children off the waiting child program want girls-only.

Now, to talk about your article....haha

I think some people who say that there will be a run on adopting kids from Korea may be talking about how a celebrity may make a country the chic country to adopt from. Heck, we never even thought about China until we found out on-line friend adopted all their children from China. It made a light bulb go off and prompt us to ask more questions. At the time, we couldn't get any info out of our local domestic adoption route

OK mea culpa. I was one of the ones saying that everyone would be flocking to Korea, just like I said everyone would flock to Ethiopia after Jolie adopted from there. You got to admit, I was right about Ethiopia, but I'll admit, my comments were rude. I take you hand slap with good humor. Thanks for all you do, Dawn.

The age range for what's considered older also varies so much by agency. We're in the process of adopting a little boy from Ethiopia who was a waiting child because of his age, but he's only 2.5!! We were so surprised.
