Getting a grant to pay for your infertility treatment is everyone’s dream, but there’s a problem: infertility grants are few and far between and the competition is steep. We talked about ways to maximize your chances of getting a fertility grant to cover all or part of the cost of IVF, egg donation, or surrogacy on this week’s Creating a Family show.
Upping Your Odds of Getting an IVF Grant
To increase the chances of receiving an infertility grant make sure you do the following:
- Make sure you meet the requirements before you apply. Some grants have age, geographic, or clinic restrictions and there is no reason to waste your time and application fee on a grant that you are not eligible for.
- Make sure you meet the deadline. Most grants have a cutoff date for receiving grants listed on their website.
- Submit all the requested material promptly.
- Make a compelling case that you’ve done your share to raise as much of the cost as possible.
- Grants seldom cover the entire cost of fertility treatment, so be prepared to explain how you will pay for the rest of the cost.
Making a Compelling Financial Case
On the show, we had the Executive Directors of two fertility grant organizations (Cade Foundation and Pay it Forward Foundation). It was very clear from our discussion that their grant selection committees carefully looked at what the patients have done to cut costs and raise as much money as possible. If you apply for a grant, you will likely be asked to submit your tax return, pay stubs, a debt to income assessment, and your household budget. The applications that are most compelling are those where the applicants have done everything possible to raise the money, and need just a bit more to bridge the gap.
